Project Goals

System Configurator's job is to smooth over the differences between Linux distributions and architectures that exist during installation. In order to do this, it must accomplish a number of discreet tasks:

Detect and Configure Network Interface Card Hardware
Detect and Configure Disk Block Device Hardware
Set up Networking Scripts
Create Initial Ramdisk (if required)
Setup and run the native bootloader
Remember and Communicate the names of all the files it touched

System Configurator will do hardware, network, and bootloader setup in a non-distribution specific manner. Because of this, many more distributions then we test will most likely be able to use System Configurator for installation.

We plan to support the following distributions on x86 for the 1.0 release:

RedHat Linux
SuSE
Turbo Linux
Linux Mandrake
Conectiva Linux
Red Flag Linux
Debian GNU/Linux
MSC.Linux
Caldera Linux

We plan to support Itanium, PowerPC, and Alpha based Linux distributions shortly after the v1.0 release.
